In Sri Lanka, it was believed that some illnesses were brought upon humans by demons. These beliefs and rituals that cure them may date back to prehistoric times.
According to Sri Lankan belief, there are eighteen demons, or sanni yakku (demons), responsible for different diseases, which can be cured by performing an exorcism. During this ritual, the demons thought to afflict the patient are summoned, instructed not to trouble humans, and banished.
The Sanni Yakuma ritual calls upon these demons and sends them back to the demon world after bringing them under control. These rituals have been performed in the southern and western parts of the country since ancient times.
